Bio

There are two wolves inside me, and they're both storytellers.

Greetings! I'm James Nicholson, a dual-role narrative designer and mission designer. My main goal in the industry is pushing games to tell stories in ways that only they can.

I have a master's degree in level design from SMU Guildhall, with a focus on mission and gameplay design. And I have a bachelor's degree from UT Austin, where I hammered my liberal arts honors major into essentially a video game writing degree, even making a narrative design document for my thesis.

Through my career in game design and narrative design, I've written and implemented narrative into Unreal, Unity, Creation Kit, and Twine. Out of engine, I've also written short stories, D&D one-shots, screenplays, and hypertext fiction. I'm currently working on a visual novel and a full-on novel.

In short, if you're looking for a writer who can also implement content in-game, I've got you covered.

My strengths as a writer include character-driven narratives, worldbuilding grounded in real human experience and cultures, attention to detail within a fictional universe (whether it's mine or preexisting), and asking deep questions about the human condition.

I'm also a proud member of the CA program from GDC 2024. Also the Greater Gaming Society of San Antonio and ATX GameMakers.
